Though there are many people who do not know what online backup is, anybody who uses their computer to work with and store important files and information should be aware of it. Backing up information online is a method of storing copies of files in a remote network or Internet location. When you use online backup, you will always have to a way to recover any files that may become lost or corrupted on your own computer.
There are several server companies that offer backup services, also known as “offsite data storage”. When you set up an account with an online backup company, the information and files on your computer are constantly backed up to a remote location through a network or the Internet, and these backed up files are immediately accessible to you in case your original files have been compromised. This, in essence, is like having an extra hard drive attached to your computer that stores copies of everything that is on your primary hard drive. Though this can be done by actually using a secondary hard drive or zip drive, it is much safer to save files through online backup since they would be unaffected by theft, fire damage, or other types of damage to your computer.
For those who use their computers for recreational use and no work related activities, complete online backup is probably not cost effective. However, there are servers that you can work with online who will store only the information that you choose, and the charge is minimal. For companies and people who do a majority of their work on their computers, however, using backup services for all of their information is a worthwhile investment.
