When I was a kid, I never consciously decided to learn how to do magic tricks. I wasn't even really curious about magicians. It is more that I liked to see how things work, and I had some pretty uncanny powers of perception. I would learn magic tricks practically whenever I would see them. It got to the point where kids wouldn't invite me to their birthday parties because they didn't want me to spoil the fun. To me, that was the fun – I loved to understand the secrets behind the illusions and to explain them to other people. I admit that I was a little bit of a know it all, but I bet I was also a pretty fascinating kid.

Learn Magic Tricks
Most people learn a magic trick or two as a kid, but my fascination with them grew and grew. When I was in college, I began to learn magic card tricks that I would show off at parties. Not only would my skills with cards help me to meet people and get dates, but they would also help me at the poker table. I'm a little bit embarrassed about this, but more than once I cheated with cards to win a bet. I didn't do it for profit alone, although it was certainly nice to get a little bit more money. For me, it was all part of learning magic tricks. In order to learn magic tricks, I would have to know for a fact that they worked. The best way to test them out was at the card table, where people would be watching out for a cheater.
Becoming Professional With Magi Tricks
Of course, it was a long way between starting to learn how to do magic tricks and becoming a professional. Anyone can learn magic tricks, but being a magician is more than that. Being a magician is almost a form of hypnosis. When you learn magic tricks, you're simply learning a sequence of movements to deceive your audience. When you become a magician, however, you learn how to embroider your magic tricks – to create a compelling story around them so that people won't be able to figure out how you do them. You can learn magic tricks from the best magicians in the world, but unless you have the natural stage flare, you will never get anywhere beyond working at kids birthday parties. The magic tricks are the easy part – the performing is what is difficult.
